Tennis coach Johnson builds ‘character-first’ Think Recruitment team
Birmingham recruiter Think Recruitment is proving that investing in people is the smartest business strategy.
At a time when many businesses are cutting costs in response to the National Insurance hike, the company has hired world-class tennis coach Chris Johnson (pictured) to work with the team, applying elite sports coaching to recruitment and doubling profits while boosting staff retention.
“In sport, you don’t just look at raw talent – you look at character. That’s exactly how we operate at Think,” said Dom Hall, managing director at Think Recruitment. “Skills can be taught. Character can’t. Bringing in Chris was a natural extension of that philosophy – because the best recruiters aren’t just good at their jobs, they have the mindset to perform under pressure, push themselves and stay the course.”

Johnson has spent years coaching elite tennis players to peak performance, as well as coaching alongside World Number 4 Jo Durie to produce numerous players who have been top 5 in Great Britain and playing at Wimbledon. He is applying the same principles of discipline, mindset and resilience to recruitment.
“High performers in sport and business share the same traits: discipline, resilience and the ability to push through challenges,” said Johnson. “Think Recruitment already had a team full of great people. My role is to sharpen their mindset, develop their confidence, and help them operate at an elite level – without burnout.”
Choosing to invest in people over profit margins has led to a workforce that is stronger, more resilient and more engaged than ever, according to Think Recruitment’s results. This has led to “a 50% reduction in staff turnover, a doubling of profits and a workplace where people actually want to stay and grow”, the statement concluded.
